Chapter 90

Henry kissed his forehead and warm breath tingled his hairline. “You’ve equipped them with all the tools they need to deal with life, and they’ll deal with this. You are the best parent I know, and I’m so proud of the man you’ve become, but not surprised.”

Jake lifted his head and smiled at Henry. “What do you mean you’re not surprised?”

“I’ve loved you for so many years, from afar for a long time, but the qualities I see in you, it’s always been there, and I’ve always loved them in you. I love you. You’re not alone anymore,” Henry said, his voice raspy. “Nor are the boys. You all have me now.”

“Thank God for that,” Jake said and a sigh died on his lips. Exhaustion took over and he fell into a troubled slumber for the first time in what seemed like days, Henry’s constant heartbeat against his ear the most beautiful sound he’d ever heard.
