Chapter 91

“Pull through for me,” he said. 12: Sunday

Matt

Matt woke up feeling just slightly better than death warmed up. He’d at least managed to sleep a few hours straight through, waking up with Brian’s arm cradling him each time. He’d stretched, feeling his tired muscles give way, then listened to Brian’s breathing and allowed it to lull him back to sleep.

He’d finally woken up alone in Brian’s bed as the sun was coming up, to the sound of the shower running again. Every time Brian showered he stayed in there until the water ran cold and then waited for it to warm up again before taking another scalding-hot shower. When he emerged from the steam-filled bathroom, his skin always seemed to look red and raw from the heat and obvious scrubbing he had given it. If it was his brother’s way of dealing, neither him nor his uncle was going to say anything about it.
