“Matt?”

He shook his head again, trying to avoid this line of questioning and fighting to keep his resolve. Instead of pulling his thumb to pieces, Matt braved another piercing stare from James and lifted his gaze. James said nothing, but Matt kept the stare until he tears stung his eyes and his resolve crumbled. A look of concern changed to panic as James’ frame tensed in the chair opposite Matt, and he leaned forward.

“What’s going on?”

Matt let out a shaky breath. “My brother.” Matt stared up at James who was on the verge of getting up from his seat. “He was attacked over the weekend.”

“What happened?” James asked. “Is Brian okay? Do they know who did it?”
