Chapter 28

The young ones crowded close to the door, sacks held out with bright smiles. Did their ailments not cause pain? Trailing bandages, the completely wrapped child stepped forward. “Those’re pretty.”

“Thank you.” He held still as chubby little fingers reached out for a touch. The young one did not hesitate. It stroked Castiel’s inky feathers like he would rub Set’s nose. It made him smile. “What is your name?”

“Chrissie.” The child ducked its head and looked at him through lowered lashes. Such a shy gesture and Castiel’s heart squeezed. Hopefully it was not afraid of him. “Are you a angel? ‘Cuz you got a silver halo. I thought it was ‘posed to be gold.”

Delighted, Castiel grinned. “Yes, I am an angel. Only the archangels have golden halos though. To show their higher status.”
