Behind me, she kept calling out my name, “Cannon! Cannon!”

I ignored her, though, walking back to Legend Way where my boyfriend awaited a morning kiss, and his kid brother was probably jonesing for some pastries. 47: Protecting a Brother

Ten minutes later, I ended up on Legend Way, dripping wet from the heavy humidity. Every square inch of my flesh was soaked with perspiration. There wasn’t a single dry spot on my body, which clarified that I would need a shower by the end of the day.

Patrick was up and about upon my return. He stepped out of the shower as I entered his shed. I passed him a coffee and said, “What’s your favorite pastry?”

“Apricot,” he answered, taking a sip of the coffee.

“So cinnamon apple it is.” I reached into the paper bag from the coffee shop and passed a pastry to him.

“You’re too sweet,” he said. “You shouldn’t spoil me like this.”

“It’s how I like to treat my boyfriends,” I said.

He raised his eyebrows and asked, “Do you have more than one boyfriend?”
