Chapter 10

“Well, do as you please.” Gran sighed. “The Lodge has been there for fifty years. I don’t think it’ll blow away tonight.”

Was she trying to get rid of me? I walked away.

“Are you okay?” Melissa came up behind me. I nodded. “Things seemed a little tense with your friend.”

“She wants to run my life.”

“And you want to run your own life.”

I nodded again.

“Am I prying?” she asked.

Yes, yes. “No. No,” I said. “I’m not used to my private life following me around.”

“Private lives tend to do that.”

“I guess.”

“Oh! Where’s the nearest post office?” Melissa asked.

“If you already have a stamp, you can put it in Gran’s mail box. The postman will pick it up this afternoon. If you need something else, the nearest P.O. is in Sunapee. Whatcha need?”

“Since our talk this morning, I was thinking of writing to Bill. I don’t exactly know what to say.”

“Why not call him?”

“Because he’ll probably try to talk me out of it.”
