“Some of the photos yesterday were fantastic,” he said as he smiled at me. “Some of your facial expressions were outstanding. I can see why you got this job. I think there are several that are usable. Today, we’re going to try something a little different.

“Instead of you just sitting there playing, let’s start somewhere else. I want you to use the floor and your entire body. Take your shoes off. Sit, lay, stretch, kneel, whatever feels right. Lie down on the floor with your cello as if it was your lover. Wrap your arms around it.”

I took off the high-heeled sandals. One of Rick’s assistants took them and I got my cello and walked onto the backdrop curtain, which hung across the room. I sat down on the floor.

He got me into position while his assistants were focusing the lighting. When he looked through the lens, he said, “No, there’s a shadow on the right side of her face.” So everyone rushed around to place different lights elsewhere. Finally, he was satisfied.
