Chapter 34

“I have read the statements, interviewed the officers and suspects, and spoken to the judge,” Mr. Harrison was saying. “That’s why it has taken me so long to make my way out here. Judge Franklin is a circuit court judge. I had to drive nearly to Savannah to catch up to him.”

Cooter snorted, though Nikoloz was not certain if it was an opinion of the lawyer himself, the judge, or the supposedly long drive to the courthouse. The police probably had to drive quite a distance out here, and would consider “halfway to Savannah” to be a mere jaunt.

“Judge Franklin was quite agreeable,” Harrison continued. “Once I’d explained the situation to him, he agreed that his nephew and companions should be tried by an impartial party, perhaps even in another county. I’d imagine the poor man would be happy to wash his hands of that relative.”
