Chapter 38

“It’s money.”

“I don’t think I’d take the chance.”

Cam looked over at her. “It’s a gamble, but the only other job I could find was as a file clerk in a doctor’s office. How demeaning is that?”

“And you’re from Baltimore? What did you do there before you went to Hagerville?”

“I was on the BPD,” Cam mumbled softly.

“You were a cop?” Erika seemed astounded.

“Let’s not talk about it, okay?”

“Oh. Okay. Sorry I brought it up.”

“You live in Bethesda?” Cam countered to change the subject.

“I have for the last twelve years. I’m originally from Knoxville, Tennessee.”

Cam glanced over at her. “What brought you to Maryland?”

“My girlfriend was a Navy nurse.” She stopped with a sardonic smirk. “I suppose she still is, but that was years ago.”

Cam nodded in agreement. “I moved to Baltimore because my partner was doing her residency at Johns Hopkins.”

“Where from?”

“D.C. She had been going to Georgetown.” That was the truth, better than telling her she worked for the CIA.
