Chapter 39

Cam took a deep breath. “What do we do now?” she asked.

“Keep going to my place.” There was a moment of silence.

Erika’s cellphone rang.

“Yes…We’re half way back to Bethesda…It seems okay. She’s a little shook up by what happened…Yes, I’d say that…okay.” She handed the phone to Cam. “Blake wants to talk to you.”

Cam took the phone and said simply, “Hi.”

“Are you okay?” he asked.

“I’m all right, maybe a little chilled. I hid in the bushes behind the eighteen-wheelers until I was sure the police had left. I know it’s hot out, but not when sitting in moist foliage.”

Blake was silent as he thought it through. “Were they all state police or were there federal, too?”

“I saw one sheriff, three state, and two unmarked. The unmarked were probably federal. In fact, I think I saw a couple that had DEA on their jumpsuits.”

“Damn,” he exclaimed, “Then we lost it all. If the Feds got hold of it, it’s gone. Okay, let me talk to Erika again.”
