In June 1966, ACLU attorney Eron Lassiter attends his uncle’s wedding and makes an unsettling discovery. “You guys having a good weekend?” James asked once he was settled. Todd wrapped his arms around James’ stomach and wrested his chin on James’ left shoulder. James’ strawberry blond hair looked a few shades deeper red against Todd’s black hair.


“Yes, we are.” Garrett said. Irritated with the intrusion at first, he relaxed when he figured they could take the opportunity to talk to them about their relationship.


“First trip,” Eron said as he lit a cigarette.


“Oh nice. Where did you guys meet…I mean you are together, right?” Todd asked.


“A wedding,” Garrett answered. “And yes, we are together.”


“Most couples in this place are,” James said.


Eron exhaled slowly. “What about you?”


“Believe it or not, we both came here last year and met at an early tea.”


“That’s nice, so this is like an anniversary?”


James took a sip of his amber cocktail. “Yeah, we figured we’d repeat the trip and spend some needed time together.”
