Chapter 52

His father’s brothers, Uncle George and Uncle Grant, were always happy, but not his father, who was always in a bad mood. After the old man went to work or to play golf on weekends, Eron’s mother cheered up. But the older he got, the longer it took for her to recover.

Eron loved the fact that he didn’t have to call George to let him know he was coming. He found his uncle in the den watching college football.

“Come in; sit down, son,” George said. “Happy Thanksgiving.”

“Thanks, George, Happy Thanksgiving to you.”

“What’d you do?” George kept one eye on the TV. “You weren’t alone were you?”

“No, I spent it with Mary Ellen and her family.”
