Eron shook his head as sadness tugged at his heart. He took another drag on his cigarette and tucked away the sound of Garrett in the throes of passion. He tossed the cigarette off the deck, into the yard and stared into the emptiness that surrounded the house.

Could he endure a lifetime of such events, his and Mary Ellen’s presence required, because that’s what family does? He and Garrett would run into each other, comment on the cuteness of their children, maybe make play dates and plan for his daughter to marry Garrett’s son.
