Chapter 50

“We were really thinking of something altogether smaller,” I told her, clearing room on the kitchen table for what I had to assume was the entire summer’s crop from Vidalia Sweet’s garden.

“Oh, I know all about that,” she told me. “Mikey came home the other night with some story about you and Thumper and maybe a couple of witnesses, and I said ‘Oh no they don’t.’ I got right on the phone to Flash Flood and said ‘Honey,’—”

“Reverend Flood, Mother,” Mikey corrected her.

“I said, ‘Honey,’” Bitsy went on, “’We need to put a proper wedding together for these boys. Fox has come all this way home.’ And he came around to see things my way.”

“They always do,” Bob-Gunnar muttered.

She ignored him and sailed on. “So I called Vidalia Sweet and I said, ‘Honey, we’re gonna need flowers, and plenty of ‘em. And you know how she loves to show off her flowers. Well, maybe you don’t, but Berger and Mikey certainly know what I’m talking about.”
