Chapter 14

I caught Chris’s eyes on me. He was still calling out instructions and encouragement to the class, but his gaze was locked on mine and I relished it. It was as intense a look as when he’d been on top of me, inside me. We were not done, Chris and me. We were not.

The song ended and faded out into a slow track as we went into the cool down segment. I came back to Earth with a bump. As Chris looked away from me, all the pains I’d temporarily forgotten came back with a vengeance. Fuck me, that hurt. But I’d made it. I’d thought I was going to die several times, and I had no doubt I’d feel worse tomorrow and probably for days, but I’d fucking made it.

I staggered off the bike, went through the cool-down stretches, and Chris dismissed the class. I picked up my empty water bottle. It looked bone dry inside. I swear I’d sucked every lingering drop from it. On the other hand, my towel was soaked with sweat.

“You seemed to enjoy that.”
