Chapter 20

“What was that?” said Lacy.

“What if Tom is cheating, Lace? What then? What life will I have? All our plans are linked with each other’s. Everything. He’s always taken care of me, even when we were broken up. I don’t even have a driver’s license, for Pete’s sake, ‘cause he’s always been there to drive me around.”

“If that’s the case,” Lacy said carefully, “then isn’t it better that you find this out while you’re this young? That you can still have a future without him?”

“But I don’t want a future without Tom.”

“And that’s why we’re not jumping the gun,” said Lacy. “We’re almost there and then we can put whatever this is to bed for good.”

“Where is this Godforsaken home wrecker’s house?” asked Tim.

“Would you cool it with the rhetoric? We’ve been driving for ages, I’m starving.”

“Me, too, but we can’t give up now, Lace. We’re here now and I want to look this Alice in the eye before tearing into her. I have to know what’s been going on.”
