“There is a Council,” he told me.
“No,” I whispered. I had never heard of a Council before. Why weren’t we told?
He nodded. “Four members of the Colony meet with me every week to review the Code and any infractions against it. You’d be surprised how many people don’t take their pills every day. Some forget and double-up the next night, but some have their own reasons.”
I thought of Brin’s mother. Of myself. Of Kyer. “Who makes up the Council?”
A slow smile spread across his face. “You’ll learn in time.”
“Are they elected?” I asked, even though I knew they were not. If they were, I would’ve heard about it sooner. “Does the rest of the Colony pick them?”
