He looked to one side and saw Paul hanging limply in the arms of the other creature. There was a gash on his forehead and Carter wondered if he’d got it trying to fight the beast off. His eyes were closed. Carter’s stomach lurched as he wondered if his friend was still alive or not. What if the creature had killed him? He’d be all alone in this nightmare. Slowly his thoughts turned against him, conjuring up images of everything that could go wrong. He closed his eyes and fought against the barrage of ghastly scenes filling his head. Then reason told him they wouldn’t be wasting the time and energy to bring a dead body with them, and therefore Paul must still be alive. It was logical. Paul had to be alive!
