Chapter 7

“It is you,” said Paul, pushing his way through the assembled mass. “Are you all right?”

Carter took a moment to catch his breath then grabbed hold of Paul’s hand.

“I will be now,” he said, patting the bleeding wound on his knee.

The screech of a bat-creature interrupted their reunion and a ripple of murmurs radiated through the group of men. A pair of large black creatures burst into the room, gnashing their teeth and snapping at the captives like rabid dogs. Carter and Paul were herded by those behind them down another narrow corridor lined with cells, some of which were occupied by naked and semi-naked men; their gaunt faces made more shocking by the effect of shadows.
