“No. I was a goody two shoes. Just seeing him patrol the halls and cafeteria was enough.”

His thoughts on raising children lined up with mine. “It’s far too strenuous and tenuous. I sometimes think no matter what you do, it’s fifty-fifty. You could love your kid until your heart bleeds and he might turn out no good.”

“I agree. I worry how big a role nature plays over nurture. My brother is a lot like my dad, who’s a lot like his, and on and on. I like other people’s kids, though.”

“Me, too. I’m just petrified I would screw one up.”
