Chapter 15

He shook his head back and forth. “No.”

I took his grilled cheese from its own plate and made room for it beside the dinner roll on the one with the meatloaf. “That work?”

“Yup.” He sighed. “Thanks.”

I removed the second dish and offered him the spoon he’d definitely need. He looked so embarrassed. In fact, his eyes avoided mine. They stayed fixed on the counter.

“Hey.” I gently brought him back to me by lifting his chin. “No worries. We’re good to go.”

“At home, I might have just drank from the bowl like a cup. I’m better in public…less of a beast.” His smile was faint. “You really never noticed me doing this sort of thing before?”

“Maybe it’s more apparent in your head than it is to other people?”

“Some people definitely notice.”

“I never did. I was too busy noticing how sexy you are.”

“Yeah, right. You were too busy being annoyed by me.”
