“Dad, did you change your mind about riding herd tomorrow?” That resigned tone of defeat was all too familiar.

Jack couldn’t bear to heap one more disappointment on those thin shoulders. Thank God for Cole’s offer. “I have to go see a client this afternoon. I’ll probably spend the night.”

Alex’s face settled into the closed, emotionless mask he’d worn since Carmella’s death.

Jack hated that expression. “But don’t worry—Cole has offered to watch you tonight, and he’ll take you on the cattle drive tomorrow.”

The mask cracked as hope flared in Alex’s eyes.

“I’m sorry I won’t be there with you.”

The apology didn’t even seem to register with Alex. The boy straightened as he turned to Cole. “I’m going to ride with you?”

The man nodded.

Sunshine bloomed on Alex’s face. “That’s great!”
