Chapter 33

Tyler knew Mrs. Pierce, at least, resented the fact that the boys spent every day with the Hugheses while he worked. To have found out they’d spent extratime with them wouldn’t sit well.

“How nice for Grandmother and Grandfather Hughes,” she said pointedly.

“Then we went out to—,”

“Don’t talk with your mouth full, Edward,” Mr. Pierce corrected.

Eddie swallowed. “We went out to Ward’s farm.”

Both Pierces stopped eating and looked at Tyler accusingly.

“We had a super time,” Jack chimed in. “Gramma and Grampa came, too.”

Tyler looked from his father-in-law to his mother-in-law, wondering how they were taking that news. Mr. Pierce’s jaw was set.

Then both boys began enthusiastically recounting the wonders of the day they had spent at the Cartwright’s.

Eddie finished with, “It sure would be great to live there.”

“Why on earth would you want to do that?” Mrs. Pierce said as more of a statement than a question. She had a stern edge to her voice.
