Chapter 27

Mrs. Dawson could only shake her head as new tears started to roll down her face. She feebly attempted to lay out some bread on a platter.

“Then it’s settled. You must leave right away and go home to make sure the baby will be all right.”

Mrs. Dawson looked up from her work, but still looked worried. “But who’ll take care of the house today?”

“We’ll get along. I can cook breakfast and we’ll figure out something for luncheon and dinner,” Emil said.

“And I can boil water for tea in the afternoon,” Leander chimed in.

“But what if the baby’s still sick tomorrow?” Mrs. Dawson asked.

Leander looked over Mrs. Dawson’s shoulder. Emil discreetly lifted his hand and spread his fingers wide.

“Why don’t you take five days? Don’t come back until next Monday,” he said.

“You won’t replace me? You’ll really give me until Monday to make sure the baby is all right before coming back to work?” Mrs. Dawson’s eyes pleaded with him.
