“You see, the wood is different from the original. The stain is different, too. It’s not as simple as replacing the pieces that are damaged. To be done correctly, the entire narthex needs to be renovated.”

“How much will that cost?”

“Let me get an estimate.”

“Then we’ll present it to the council,” Leander said, a bit uneasy.

He did a fine job of delivering sermons each week, but the finances and administration of the church still remained a mystery to him. He could figure and do math and keep his own affairs on a smaller scale. But when it came to the church, his head was lost in the big numbers. He turned to Charles Greene for assistance.
