In 1910, the United Kingdom is in turmoil. King Edward dies after only nine years on the throne. “I was hoping you might talk to them for me…with me?”


Leander took a deep breath to hold his exasperation at bay. “Mr. Shocking, I may be only three years out of university, but I know enough to stay out of family matters. This is a matter between you and your parents. I’m sorry. I cannot get involved.”


Basil continued to allow himself to be enthralled by the knothole in the floor. When he looked up, there were tears in his eyes.


“Do you have any suggestions how I might talk to them?”


His stomach churned with sympathy. As much as he wanted to help Basil Shocking, he knew he couldn’t get involved in the family matter.


“Basil, you must figure that out for yourself. You know them best, and you know their deepest desires for you. Think about those things and I think you’ll find the answer yourself.”


Basil stood. “Very well then, I won’t take up any more of your time.”
