“I’d like to meet with Reverend Leander Norris myself.”

“Sir, you are such a busy man,” he protested. “Why don’t I try to talk to him again? I haven’t had an audience with him alone since the trial began.”

“No, I think I’d like to talk to him myself. Will you make the arrangements?”

Why Charles hesitated before he answered, he didn’t know. “Of course, sir.” 29

It was two weeks before Leander was ready for a visit from the archbishop. Charles Greene made the arrangements with the physician and the jail warden. On the day of the visit, the warden allowed the meeting to occur in the courtyard where Leander recuperated in the early afternoon sun.
