He finished his chore and the bedroom was usable as a guest room once again. Although Emil would never walk across its floor, or any room of the church complex, his memory would be alive in Leander’s mind forever.

Cleansed of his grief and guilt, he collapsed onto his bed. For the first time in a year, Leander slept peacefully in the middle of the bed, surrounded by the warmth of knowing that his life would go on. 27

1911, Southampton

On Friday morning, after a sleepless night, Raymond Weeks waited for court to be called to order. He hadn’t looked forward to the trial at all, and he definitely wasn’t looking forward to presenting his motion to the judge this morning.

Adan Noble arrived after him. He walked to his position and immediately opened the sealed envelope on his desk. After reading the note, he tucked it away in his briefcase.

“How’s the defendant, Mr. Weeks?” the judge asked once the court session was opened.
