Chapter 48

He knew this would probably be the last time he would catch Emil’s scent.

He crossed the room and pulled back the curtains. He struggled to open the window. Once it opened, a small breeze stirred the dust in the room and it danced in the sunlight. If he looked close, he might see an outline of Emil’s body in the sunlight and dust. He blinked, and the dust rearranged itself.

Probably wishful thinking, he told himself.The dust settled down as he started into the afternoon task he had only decided to complete since his sermon earlier in the morning.

He removed the cobwebs from the windows and corners and wiped down every surface with the vinegar solution. The lemon juice helped give the entire room a fresh scent and discouraged him from remembering the unpleasant times as a child when chores felt like eternal punishment. He thought about the events of the last year while he cleaned.
