Chapter 47

Leander changed into work clothes before eating. Although it wasn’t a complete fabrication that he had some work to get done, his tasks weren’t ministerial in nature, which he may have led his parishioners to believe. For eleven years, he had kept his relationship with Emil a secret, and today’s task was no different.

After he changed, he went down to the kitchen where his dinner waited. He found the china and silver normally reserved for special occasions and holidays. Only the clinking and clanking of the dishes and silverware against each other cut through the silence that filled the parish house. Still not quite accustomed to the stillness, he returned to his upstairs study and cranked the phonograph. He turned the volume as loud as it would go. Although he could barely hear it when he returned downstairs, it provided some comfort in the quiet house.
