Chapter 56

The doctor and Miss Wardlow entering the infirmary woke him from his latest nap. There were new aches and pains, but he could feel them healing already.

“His solicitor has been after me to see the patient since he woke yesterday,” Miss Wardlow said to the doctor. “Shall we permit it?”

“As long as the patient is amenable,” the doctor said. “As long as he doesn’t upset the him.”

“Very well,” she said.

The doctor left the ward. Leander heard him conversing with Weeks outside the door, but did not understand what they were saying.

“Why don’t you rest a bit, Reverend,” Miss Wardlow said. “I’ll schedule a visit with Mr. Weeks after lunch.”

He fell asleep, not because he was tired, but because he was lying flat and the blankets kept him warm.

After lunch, Miss Wardlow escorted Weeks into the ward.

“You’re looking remarkably well,” he said to Leander.

“Thank you. I do believe I feel better than I look.”

“I’m sorry. I’m sorry you have to endure this again.”
