It was out of his control. Had he not agreed to take the boy, Raphael would have stashed him away in an orphanage. Child welfare had come a long way since Oliver Twist,but he couldn’t imagine the fate Peter might have faced.

Peter was another blessing from God. Father John had provided for him after his mother died. Raphael entered the picture during his adolescence and Cambridge years. After university, Leander spent eleven years with Emil. Now he had Peter, an even greater challenge. Peter would be a true test of his nurturing abilities.

Leander concentrated on his sermon preparation and tried not to worry about the consequences of taking on the ward. He also tried not to think about Raphael. He didn’t know if he’d ever see Raphael again. He hoped he would, but given Raphael’s history, it might be a very long time.
