The next week, Leander came across a letter. He chuckled to himself when he read the formal address—Mr. Reverend L. Norris—in Basil’s handwriting.

My Dearest Reverend,

As much as I have tried to live without your intimate company, I cannot. I do believe you have captured me with your good looks, your good deeds, and your good heart. You surprise me, Leander, which is why I feel I must surprise you with this invitation.

I would like you to meet me at the pond next Wednesday afternoon for a picnic lunch. At that time, I will share my proposal for a discreet relationship. After careful consideration of your eleven-year relationship with Mr. Strong, I think you will agree it would be a most desirable situation for both of us.
