Chapter 10

“If I’m going to get my GED, I have to study. They have books there.” Luke grinned. “So where better to do that? And I can use one of the computers to go online to take practice tests.” He sighed. “That was an eye-opener. I didn’t realize how much I don’t know about math and science and…damn near everything. So guess what I’ll be doing after work from now on. Haunting the library.”

“Aren’t there classes you can take to help you?”

Luke nodded. “One of the shelters has them, for free. I’ll check them out, too.”

“I’m proud of you,” Jourdain said, reaching across the table to grip Luke’s hand. “Anything I can do to help, let me know.”

Luke pulled his hand free. “You’ve done more than enough already. I’ll never be able to pay you back.”

“Luke,” Jourdain said softly, “I don’t wantto be paid back. That’s not why I’m helping you. I know you don’t believe me, but it’s the truth.” He took Luke’s hand again, holding it tightly. “All I want is to be a part of your life—as a friend.”
