Chapter 11

Laughing, Luke nodded in agreement.

Jourdain dropped Luke off downtown, as he’d requested. Luke picked up his backpack from the floorboard, thanked Jourdain again, and strolled away. Jourdain’s gaze stayed on the young man until he was out of sight, while wishing Luke had agreed to come home with him. If he had, I would have kept my promise. I can’t move too fast or he’ll vanish, and that I will notallow. He sighed. Patience is a virtue, or so they say. In all my years, I’d think I’d have learned that. What’s a week, or a month, it the grand scheme of my life? “Not much,” he murmured, heading back to his condo. “Even though each minute will seem like an hour, and each hour, a day—in the end, it will be worth the wait.” 5

By the time he’d finished his first day at the warehouse, Luke was exhausted. There’s a hell of a difference between sitting on my ass begging for change, and working my ass off hauling boxes around.
