Chapter 13

Jourdain laughed. “I suspect between us we can come up with a place within your budget.”

Luke smirked. “I have one?”

“You had better. And you need to open a bank account. Now that you’re working, that shouldn’t be a problem. As soon as you get your first paycheck, I’ll take you to my bank.”

“You don’t have to. I’m not a baby. I think I can do it on my own.”

“I’m sure you can. It was an offer, nothing more.” Jourdain smiled at him. “I like helping you, when you let me. I’ve made it clear that I want you in my life. At least as a friend—and more if we want to move past that.”

“You have,” Luke agreed. “Friendship, I can deal with. I like you that way, even if I do think you’re a bit crazy to want to be friends with someone like me. The rest…” He shook his head. “That’s not in the picture yet.” He looked squarely at Jourdain. “It may never be.”

“I can accept that, as much as I don’t like the idea. I’m not going to pressure you. I promise.”
