Chapter 39

“They use ones owned by other vampires, who, from what I understand, get their supplies from willing donors.”

“Jeez. Who’d do that?”

“People are strange.” Finn slung his arm over Luke’s shoulders as they started back to the house. “Besides, it’s not like there are thousands of vampires roaming around. Their population has dwindled in recent years. The result of the Old and Ancient ones deciding that too many, in this day and age, could well bring their existence to the notice of the general population.”

“Is it the same with shifters?”

Finn shook his head. “When we shift to our animal form, we do it in unpopulated areas. Our biggest risk is some hunter deciding he wants a wolf or coyote pelt, or an elk’s head to hang over his fireplace.”

“Damn,” Luke whispered.

“Yeah. Not exactly how I want to end my life.”

“It must be hard for the ones who live right it the city. I mean, they’d need an excuse to disappear every night so they can shift and be…their other selves.”
