Chapter 33

“Can I have everyone’s attention,” said Buddy two or three times, until even the chatty inebriated people were forced to mostly quiet themselves. Buddy looked nervous but happy, and Martha appeared confident and pleased as usual.

“I have a weird feeling about this,” whispered Dom.

“Thank you,” said Buddy. “I guess I gotta say first, I have an announcement to make.” He paused and glanced at Martha. “Wehave an announcement to make.”

Murmurs rippled through the crowd.

“It’s a big one.” Buddy cleared his throat. “As you all know, exactly one-hundred-and-ninety-five days ago, my poor, dear, wonderful Buddy Angus was taken from this Earth in the most vicious and depraved manner.”

When he choked up and paused, Dom leaned closer.

“He keeps track of the days?”

“He loved that cow,” Kiko whispered back. Dom rolled his eyes. Martha squeezed Buddy’s hand and he nodded, ready to go on.
