“Hello.”

He expected Police Chief Gordon, maybe, but not a woman’s voice.

“Kiko,” she said. She sounded livid.

“Dom, actually,” he said. “Who is this?”

“Evelyn Heuer, you prick,” she snapped. “Why is my son in the hospital again?”

Dom was fairly certain Chad’s last name was Heuer, but Evelyn’s question confirmed that. He shot Kiko an awkward glance, unsure what to say, but the man was focused on Mother.

“Broken leg,” he said.

“Really? You think I don’t already know that? Who do you think called me about him? I’ll give you a clue: it certainly wasn’t you or Kiko.”

“We were a little—”

“God, I don’t want your excuses,” said Evelyn. Dom was beginning to wish he’d insisted Kiko answer the phone instead. Putting a diaper on a goose was preferable to this, and Kiko was so much better at handling disgruntled people.
