Chapter 53

“Here for the funeral, are you, Mr….”

“Grady,” said Dom, trying not to visibly sigh as the police chief slowly stalked up from behind him.

“Spell that.”

Dom gritted his teeth and spelled his name. He would have considered a snappy remark if Gordon hadn’t appeared so tattered and annoyed. The man had severe dark circles under his wrinkled eyes, and even his thin hair looked to be freeing itself from the neat rows he’d combed it in. He probably wasn’t in the mood, so Dom peered over at his pad instead and saw that he was listing everyone attending.

“I’m just here looking for anyone suspicious,” said Dom.

“You try to do my job, son, you’ll get yourself killed,” said Gordon. Dom scowled.

“I haven’t exactly done terribly in the past.”

Gordon sighed and pulled up his pants. He grimaced as he spoke.

“Tell you the truth, I had to make the call this morning after what happened last night. You remember anything new today?”

Dom shook his head.

“What call?”
