I sat on one of the benches for the longest time until someone sat down beside me and placed his right hand on my left thigh. At first, I didn’t know who the hand belonged to, but a familiar voice spoke.
“Why did I think I would find you here, Paul?”
Matthew Hildebrand squeezed my thigh.
“The question is why are you looking for me?” I asked him, enjoying his hand on my thigh.
Both of us looked up at the stars, but we couldn’t tell Jupiter from the North Star. A light wind kicked up and grazed our faces, blowing eastward.
“I’ve been looking for you for the past hour, if you want to know the truth. You’re hard to find.”
I thought of my shitty dinner date with Dugan Brae, rolled my eyes in the dark, and replied, “Sometimes I like to be found. It’s the hunt men perform for me that I enjoy most.”
“Well, I don’t mind looking for you.”
“Why did you want to look for me, Matthew?”
“Because I went to see Dr. Olivia Bain this afternoon.”
How could I be surprised? “And how did it go?”
