Dugan blinked a number of times, bit his upper lip, attempted to say something that leaked out of his mouth and sounded like garble. Obviously frazzled, he eventually cleared his throat and told me, “It’s true. I thought I could get over you faster if we didn’t talk about you.”
I started to put all the puzzle pieces together after listening to the father and son team. Colby adored me and wanted to be a part of his family. Plus, the kid said he felt sad since I wasn’t around. And Dugan, by the sound of it, just happened to be having a hard time getting over me.
“Dugan, be honest with me. Are you over me or not?”
He looked at the floor, then at his son, and then back at me. He bit at his upper lip with bottom teeth. “We need to talk about this alone. Come in the kitchen with me, Paul. Will you do that for me?”
“Sure,” I said. “Whatever it takes to get to the bottom of this. Just so we both know.” 69: We Had a Good Thing
