“Tom.” John sat down on one end of the sofa opposite him, while Maggie took the chair beside her husband’s. The mayor looked worn out despite having slept, and—in John’s opinion—not at all well. His normal ruddy completion was pale now, his eyes deeply shadowed. “Do you want to tell me what happened?”

“I’m not sure. I mean, yes, I can tell you what I remember, but it’s not much.” Tom Dunn fingered the upholstery on the arm of the chair. “When I left home…two days ago now, I guess, I was heading in to work. Then I remembered I promised Ms. Miller I’d keep an eye on her place since I drive by it every day. She’s out of town visiting family.”

John nodded. “I know. Why did you leave your car there?”
