Since John really didn’t want Arik knowing he was checking up on him, he began a search of immigration records from twenty years ago. It only took him fifteen minutes to realize that was not his forte. But he knew someone who loved genealogy and could probably find the information relatively quickly.

“Grandma,” he said when Constance Darkman answered the phone, “I need your help.” He explained what he was after and gave her the few things he had on Arik. “He said, when I talked to him today, that he emigrated here when he was ten. If he really is thirty…”

“Then he came over in 1996. I’ll see what I can find out for you.” He heard her tapping something before she asked, “Why are you interested in him. Do you think he’s not what he seems?”
