“Not for long,” Arik agreed, smiling ruefully.

“How did you learn youwere one?”

“My grandmother was. She saw the Seeker in me and taught me all I needed to know.”

“Saw it? What? We glow or something?” John asked with a trace of sarcasm.

Arik laughed. “It’s not quite that bad. It’s more a case of a Seeker being able to sense when a person they’ve seen or met is one—even when that person isn’t aware of it themselves.”

“So I could have gone through life not knowing I’m one if you hadn’t come along?”

“Possibly. It takes opening your mind and your senses—the way I had you do—before you can see the life-suckers.” Arik paused. “Now if you were into using mind expanding drugs, like LSD, and one was around you might have seen it.”

“And freaked.”

“Undoubtedly. Then put it down to the drug and moved on.”
