Chapter 20

“You did. I know it’s frightening. It scared the hell out of me the first time I saw one. Didn’t do much for John Darkman last night, either.”

“This is too unbelievable.”

Ewan touched Noah’s shoulder briefly as if trying to reassure him he wasn’t crazy. “They do exist.”

“How would you know if you can’t see them? Maybe…Maybe it’s some kind of mind game Arik’s playing on…on all of us.”

“To what end?” Ewan replied.

“I don’t know. Damn.” Noah leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees, staring into the rushing waters of the falls. “If they are real. If I did see…it…this life-sucker. Why me?” He looked up at Arik. “Why you? Why Sheriff Darkman? Why us, but not Ewan or…or anyone else here?”

“You and I and John are Seekers. A special sort of human with the ability to see them.”

“Lucky us,” Noah muttered.

“Lucky for the town that we can.”

“And lucky for the rest of the world—that Seekers exist,” Ewan added.
