O’Shea was a noisy, spirited player, and they each split a game. He was ready to break the tie, but Bond said, “Sorry. I have rounds tomorrow before office hours, and I need to get some sleep.”
So they racked the balls and hung up their cues and chalk for the night.
“Help yourself to whatever’s in the kitchen for breakfast. Hope you brought your tea because coffee’s all I have. I have bedding, by the way, so you won’t need your own. I also have a pillow if you didn’t bring a favorite. We do have to share the bathroom, however.”
“So long as it’s got hot water and towels, it’ll be heaven.”
Bond nodded. “Our accommodations on missions, if you could call them that, usually left a great deal to be desired.”
“The hole in the floorboards for a toilet were the ones that got to me, being as tall as I am. Me knees were touchin’ me chin.”
They laughed companionably again as they climbed the stairs to the second floor.
