Chapter 35

“Do you ever go back?”

He didn’t have to explain what he meant. “Ay, I have a few times, but me máthair mhóris recently gone and me da lives here now.”

“Your dad’s mother?”

“Ay.”

“I’m sorry to know that.”

“In a way, she was my anchor. Da was away so much, then Mum remarried a man who beat me and broke me limbs because he couldna control me, then he shipped me to a school for pre-delinquent teens.

“Later, I realized those beatings had toughened me for the unbelievable rigors of Delta training. But I do no’ know how I’d have survived my teens if the pure heart of me da’s mum had no’ believed in the good in me; her arms held me in some of the bad times.”

Bond turned and reached for him, pulling him close and tight. Rory wrapped his arms around him, and they clung to each other for a long time.

Rory murmured what Bond assumed were Irish Gaelic endearments and then said, “I would’ve died if ya had been hurt. I have waited for ya for years.”
