Later, they toured Rory’s home, and Bond laughed when they entered his library.

“My God, we’re so alike. Except my theme is all about the sea and ships.”

Rory’s wall was plastered with photos and prints of the Wright Brothers at Kitty Hawk, Charles Lindbergh, Chuck Yeager, Sally Ride, the first woman in space, and even the bold but ill-fated Amelia Earhart.

Perhaps the largest were of Alan Shepard in his flight suit, the first man in space on Freedom 7and commander of the Apollo 14moon flight. Next to him was Sally Ride, first woman in space, dressed in her flight suit.

“She was gay,” Rory said in a quiet voice.

“She was?” Surprise rumbled through Bond.

“Until her death, no one knew she’d had a woman partner for thirty years.”

“I think we both know how damned difficult it must’ve been for her to hide who she really was.” Bond slid an arm around Rory’s waist and hugged him.
