Chapter 38

“Some would say we were insane to work in counter-terrorism.”

“But we know we weren’t and aren’t. We had a heightened sense of patriotism plus training that created a sense of invulnerability maybe, but what we did and accomplished made sense. We were there to save lives, even if it meant killing in a firefight those who’d kill us first. And counter-terrorism wasn’t all we did.”

Bond said, “A SEAL team was at the Boston Marathon in an attempt to prevent what turned out to be two bombings. They assisted the wounded, but we’ve also taught natives in Africa how to have a fresh water supply.

“You risked your life throwing your body over Milton Friedemeyer…just as you’d done to save a hostage’s life when I rescued you and your team in Kabul. That was a good thing, right? It didn’t turn out for him as you’d hoped, but it might’ve made the difference for him.”
